THE ACTIVE COMMUTING PROJECTS
Walk in to Work Out
Is an initiative that aims to encourage employees to improve their health and also the environment by actively commuting some or all of their journey to work. The evidence behind the initiative comes from research conducted by NHS Greater Glasgow, Glasgow University and the Health Education Board for Scotland.

The Walk In To Work Out study examined whether a cognitive behavioural intervention delivered via interactive materials (The Walk In To Work Out pack) could increase active commuting behaviour (walking and cycling) in a workplace setting. The study took the form of a randomised control trial with employees (n=295) from 3 Glasgow workplaces volunteering to be randomly assigned to a Control or Intervention group. The results indicate that the intervention was successful. The intervention group was almost twice as likely to increasing walking as the control group. However, the pack was not successful at increasing cycling. |
The findings and the Walk In To Work Out pack have been disseminated to all local authorities and health boards in Scotland and it is hoped that the findings will influence workplace health promotion initiatives to promote physical activity and green transport policies.
Travelling
Green
Is an active commuting project aimed at primary 5 aged children. The project was piloted last year in two primary schools in West Dunbartonshire and aimed to assess whether or not a combined intervention delivered via interactive materials could increase active commuting (walking) to school. The initial pilot was very successful and there was a significant change in the commuting behaviour amongst the children attending the school that received the intervention.
It is hoped that after further piloting of resources, this project will be rolled out to all primary schools in West Dunbartonshire.
