Kool Kids - A Children's Health Club

Kool Kids is a children's Health Club which was introduced as a pilot initiative to two primary schools in Greater Pollok earlier this year. This is a partnership initiative between NHS Greater Glasgow, Glasgow City Council Cultural and Leisure Services and funded through the Greater Pollok Social Inclusion Partnership. The project has been successful in raising awareness of healthy choices and providing opportunities for physical activity within the school curriculum and during after school activity sessions.

O-Zone classes

Live Up Report

Culture and Leisure Services currently offer O-Zone classes through their "Living it up" program. The program offers classes specifically designed for clients who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, although members of the general public are welcome, preference is given to osteoporosis referrals.

The classes have been up and running since the end of July 2000 in a number of community centres across Glasgow. Numbers are taking a while to build up and stronger links are currently being developed with Clinicians, physiotherapists, fracture clinics and General Practitioners to ensure good referral rates to classes. This partnership work is taking place through the osteoporosis working group, which is chaired by Dr Caroline Morrison from Public Health.

Sport and Art action teams

Glasgow City Councils Culture and Leisure services department will be rolling out their new Sport and Art action teams. These teams are based on the successful model that has been developed in Easterhouse. These new teams will focus primarily on developing grassroots work at a local level. The main aim will be to combat social exclusion and promote participation and involvement. The new teams will be based within the Social Inclusion Partnerships areas.

They will have a large pool of dedicated Sport and Art officers. These officers will work jointly with the various partner agencies to develop physical activity, sport and art across the Social Inclusion Partnership areas of Glasgow. It is envisioned that these new teams will work jointly with staff throughout the Health Promotion Department. I hope to see some exciting work being created through these new teams.
